Students Tackle Child Sex Trafficking
The students, Millie Steel and Jessica Linden who are both 18, and Chloe Adams who is 17, were asked by the NHS to make a film about the kidnapping of children for sex trafficking. The film will be used as an educational tool in schools and hospitals throughout the South West, with the aim of helping people to identify children who may have been, or may be at risk from, sex trafficking. The students were assisted by their media lecturers, Lizzie Toms and Rob Chadwick, as well as the College’s safeguarding coordinator, Phil Smale. They thoroughly researched the subject by attending lectures about safeguarding, inspiring them with ideas about what the documentary should cover and who they could interview. The students arranged a series of interviews with a senior nursing manager, a doctor, a police officer and a member of the Children and Adolescent Mental Health team, with each person providing a different perspective on the issue. Filming took place in a variety of places around Plymouth, including Derriford Hospital and the city centre, using College drama students as actors. Rob Chadwick, the students’ media lecturer, said: “This is the biggest project we’ve ever arranged for the media students and it is an unbelievable opportunity and responsibility for them to take on. I’m very proud of the three students involved as they have worked incredibly hard and have delivered a fantastic product.” Student, Jessica Linden, said: “We took on the challenge and found the project an interesting, yet difficult topic to deal with. The filming was very carefully planned and we were always liaising with the NHS team, every step of the way, to make sure we were on the right track. “To prepare for our filming and to learn about this over looked issue, we undertook a lot of research and interviews. Throughout the filming process, we have worked closely with the Safeguarding team at the College, and with nurses who come into contact with trafficked children. We have found the whole process quite challenging and a steep learning curve, but are really thrilled with the end result!” College Principal, Phil Davies, said: “I’m exceptionally proud of our students - they have worked extremely hard to research this emotive subject and highlight the issue of sex trafficking in the area, and the risk it poses to young people. Dr Alex Mayor, Medical Director for Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, said: “We are pleased to have contributed to this film. As recent cases in the media have highlighted, this is a universal problem and a major concern, which has previously been largely unrecognised and has been on the increase in recent years. The film demonstrates the importance of a multi-agency approach and brings this difficult topic to the forefront of people’s minds. “The students have done an excellent job in tackling this subject sensitively and we would like to thank them for their hard work.” The documentary is being premiered at a special launch event at The Barbican Theatre on Wednesday 23 May. The film, which was an idea initiated by Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, will be funded by the Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) and the Skills Funding Agency Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) Partnership Project Fund. |

College Celebrates ‘Outstanding’ Ofsted Report
The College has two nurseries and both are inspected separately. The Kings Road setting has been judged as outstanding, the top grade, for ever aspect of its childcare provision. The Ofsted inspection report highlights the dedication and professionalism of the nursery staff in providing a safe and stimulating environment for the children. The report emphasises the continued use of reflective self-evaluation by staff to ensure that all children ‘are sensitively supported in their progress and development in order to achieve their full potential’. The Ofsted inspector, who visited the College nursery at the end of April, found that ‘children of all ages engage in a rich, varied and imaginative range of activities that sustain their interest very effectively and provide excellent opportunities to enhance their learning and development’. Curious Kittens was also praised for its team work, which extends to external agencies across the city - ‘highly effective partnerships with parents, other professionals and schools enables adults to work together cohesively to provide excellent continuity of care and give children the best start in life’. Nursery manager, Julie Griffiths said: “It is wonderful to have the staff at Curious Kittens and the achievements of the children in our care recognised and highly praised by the Ofsted inspector. The parents of our children know that their children are well cared for and that as a team we are committed to providing an outstanding experience for each and every one of them. The Ofsted report is confirmation of this. Without exception, all of us enjoy the work we do and appreciate the privileged position we are in, helping young children to achieve their full potential.” Curious Kittens offers childcare for children aged six months to school age, and a holiday club for children up to the age of eleven. It caters for the children of students, staff and the local community. There are close links between Curious Kittens nurseries and the childcare courses run by the College. This allows childcare students to see exemplary childcare practice in action through visits and work placements. |

Explorers call on school children to join them at the world’s remotest tea party for the Queen’s Jubilee
Teachers and schools can access educational resources and lesson activities to inspire children and raise awareness of cultural identity, the Arctic environment and issues around climate change and sustainability. An intrepid team of adventurers are to trek to the highest point of the British Empire Range to hold the most remote Diamond Jubilee tea party in the world. The Arctic Jubilee Expedition 2012 is built from a seven man crew plan to summit the highest point of Queen Elizabeth Islands in the Arctic, just 560 miles from the North Pole, to have tea and cake whilst sending a loyal greeting to the Queen – to which she has pledged to reply. Isolated Queen Elizabeth Islands were named on the Queen’s coronation and Mount Barbeau has only been summited eight times. The Anglo-Canadian team are hoping that their epic adventure through the dangers of the arctic will inspire young people throughout the world. They and their Canadian partners will be linking live with schools in the UK and Canada throughout the trip via the extensive educational outreach programme of Education Through Expeditions. “Through this momentous expedition we will be leaving a legacy that will impact and inspire!” says Polar Explorer and Expedition Leader Antony Jinman. “Our interactive discussion boards will enable students from both cultures to interact and discuss questions relating to cultural identity, the Arctic environment and issues of climate change and sustainability.” Inuit partner and team member Johnny Issaluk says: “This is an opportunity to learn about Inuit heritage and stewardship of the land. It is also an opportunity to learn about what we have and what we could lose”. City College Plymouth are delighted to be ‘on –board’ as major sponsors of the expedition and are committed to the educational outreach behind this historic project. College Principal and Chief Executive Officer, Phil Davies said: “City College Plymouth is proud to be supporting this fantastic expedition to summit Mount Barbeau, in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. With two ex-students from the College taking part we are especially proud to be involved. Plymouth has a great history of producing explorers and enterprising individuals and this expedition highlights those qualities admirably.” Phil continued: “The expedition will enable College students to follow the team’s progress and interact with them through online discussion boards. Students will also benefit from the opportunity to attend a number of workshops being run by Anthony and his team on their return, which will focus on team building, enterprise and self-motivation, all of which support our aim in ensuring students gain the skills so desired by employers.” The six Plymouth-based team members will be in intensive training until they leave for Canada to join their Canadian colleagues on May 20th. All media is welcome at these events. The Arctic Jubilee Expedition 2012 will also be raising money for their chosen charity, Jeremiah’s Journey (http://www.justgiving.com/Jeremiahsjourneyarcticjubileeexpedition.) For more information or to arrange an interview with any of the team members please contact Oli Milroy on 07765308884 arcticjubileeexpedition@gmail.com or visit www.etelive.org/arcticjubilee |
